Went to the Southampton Business Show the other week. As far as business shows go, it wasn’t a big one and certain parts got over crowded due to a shortage of space, but it was OK and from what I was too a good show for those with a stand (I was just visiting).
What was interesting was it gave me a chance to do some speed networking. I’ve done quite a bit of networking for my business recently, but speed networking was a new experience. The format is simple: you get one minute to pitch your business, then one minute for the other person and then you swap round. It was pretty intensive (and tiring) and clearly you need a good focused pitch – what I missed from normal networking though was the relaxed nature of striking up a conversation, everyone was so focused on getting the most from their one minute, it wasn’t that friendly. That said, I’d do it again, it was after all exciting and fun.
